Hurricane Helene delivered catastrophic winds, flooding, and tree-fall; damaged our water lines; and washed out the roads and bridges to Useful Plants Nursery. While our greenhouses and plants survived, our business losses are substantial.
We are grateful that our teams are all safe, housed, and fed. We are in sorrow for the loss of life, property, and normalcy in Western North Carolina.
We at Useful Plants Nursery were spared the worst. Our teams spent these past few weeks helping the ecovillage where we're located and surrounding communities clear roads and rooftops, repair water lines and a hydroelectric system, and other support. The roads into Earthaven and Useful Plants Nursery are now passable but vulnerable.
Our attention turns now to stabilizing our economic situation, finding innovative ways to prepare for next season, and hopefully, generating enough support that we can pay the workers who depend on us and purchase the supplies, plants, and equipment needed to stay in business.
Donations will be used for:
We extend our deepest gratitude to those who helped grow Useful Plants Nursery into a thriving source of permaculture-based plants and education. And we thank you now for coming to our aid in a time of crisis. We are determined to restore access, plants stocks, and functionality as quickly as possible. We will live long and prosper.
Useful Plants Nursery is a permaculture-based nursery specializing in useful, phytonutritional, food, and medicine plants well-adapted to our Southern Appalachian mountains and surrounding bioregions. Our plants are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides at our nursery located at Earthaven Ecovillage.
We believe that growing your own food and medicine plants is a vitally important strategy and practice for regaining control over our collective and personal lives, our health, and our individual and bioregional economic well being. Our nursery is dedicated to putting those beliefs into practice and truly creating "Liberation through Abundance" as we serve your needs for healthy, useful landscape plants, and work together to reweave the web of life.
Breaking news: Useful Plants Nursery has a cell signal!
Cell service at Earthaven has been spotty at best. We’re very excited that the nursery now has a consistent cell signal!
What does this mean for you? You can call Lyndon during business hours and we can accept credit cards!
Though we just started being able to use a credit card reader here, it works great so far. You can still pay with cash or check, which always works.
Lyndon’s cell phone can receive phone calls or texts at (828) 778-0773 during business hours. So, call or send a text if you have any questions or would like to stop by the nursery.
We can also receive emails at the nursery.
You can also contact us at our regular phone number, (828) 669-6517. It’s a land line, so it won’t receive texts or email, only calls. Outside of business hours, it's a great place to leave a voicemail.
Please call before you head into the mountains because you will likely lose reception before you get here. There will be times when you will need to bring cash or check to the nursery, as our phone and Square reader will be at shows and away from the nursery. See show dates below.
UPN will be open from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm on Wednesdays, Thursday and Saturdays until December 15th, 2024. Please call first as there may be road closures or we may be doing storm-related clean-up. At this time Bat Cave Road South from Old Fort is the best way to get to us as Hwy-9 is mostly impassable.
We are always open by appointment and for special plant requests! And we can deliver plants. Send us an email or call us at 828-669-6517. (Cash or check only).
