Blueberry, Northern and Southern Highbush and Lowbush (Vaccinium spp.)
Full sun to part shade. Late afternoon shade is OK.
Northern highbush and lowbush: zones 2-6b
Southern highbush and lowbush: zones 6b-9 or 10
Acidic, moist, well-drained with high organic content. Always mulch plants well and maintain even moisture for best growth and production.
Blueberry bushes usually begin bearing in the nursery and mature within 6 years. For plants in 1 gallon or smaller sizes, we recommend removing the blossoms the first year after planting to let the plant focus on establishing roots. Varieties vary with respect to cold hardiness, disease resistance, and heat and drought resistance.
Highbush and lowbush blueberries are self fertile.
Blueberries can range in size from a groundcover plant to deciduous, mid-size bushes reaching 5 to 8 feet. Leaves are an attractive green in summer and often turn brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds in the fall. Plant two or more varieties to increase yields and for berry season extension.
A mature bush can produce 5 to 20 pounds of delicious, edible fruit per year, depending on variety. Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants and have many healing and anti-aging properties.
